He leaves a wife Aileen and two children, Sally and Nick, from his first marriage to Diana. Her death from ME inspired his best seller Diana’s Story.

The man behind the Emmy-award-winning Lost For Words had been in declining health for the last 10 years.

He had suffered a series of mini-strokes which robbed him of the ability to write.

He was diagnosed with cancer of the oesophagus. It was forced into remission by radiotherapy but a scan last November 12 revealed the tumour had returned.
