PEOPLE have been urged to turn away a man calling at homes telling a sob story in a bid to trick people out of cash.

Police say the Asian man's story keeps changing as he calls at homes in the Birkby area.

Sgt Tim O'Sullivan, of Huddersfield police, said: "Sometimes he tells people about a disaster affecting his relatives in Pakistan, saying he needs money to fly over there.

"Another tale is that his family's car has broken down in Manchester and he needs money to get a taxi over there.

"At other times he simply says he desperately needs a lift into Huddersfield town centre and often gets one.

"He then says `thank you' and gets out."

At least one woman has given the man money.
