SECOND World War veterans from South Asian communities are wanted by local historians.

A two-week display will be staged by the Kirklees Community History Service at the Tolson Museum, Ravensknowle Park, Moldgreen, from Sunday November 14.

The exhibition will be held to tie in with Remembrance Sunday, Eid, the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan and the Sikh and Hindu festival of Diwali.

Soldiers from South Asia fought in all theatres of war in Europe, the Middle East, North Africa and many parts of Asia.

Some were in the Battle of Britain and many South Asian women volunteered as nurses in the Indian medical services.

The Kirklees Community History Service feels it is important to commemorate the important role played by the soldiers and people of South Asia - the countries that are now India, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

Neil West, community history project officer said: "We are preparing a display to acknowledge the contribution of South Asian servicemen and women in World War Two.

"Their sacrifice remains unsung despite the fact that soldiers from South Asia outnumbered their British comrades in receiving the Victoria and George Cross medals - the highest awards for bravery."

The service would like to hear and use the accounts of local people from South Asian Communities who were engaged in fighting or in helping the war effort." said Mr West.

He also wants to hear from forces personnel who served alongside South Asian comrades.
