DEVELOPMENT of a disused mill in the heart of Brighouse could begin next year subject to approval from the Secretary of State.

Calderdale Council hopes to build retail units on the site of Sugden Mill, Brighouse.

But the council has to meet objections from Younger Homes Northern which owns part of the disused flour mill complex.

Now Secretary of State Hazel Blears will decide whether to grant Calderdale Council the right to buy the property, following recommendations from the Planning Inspectorate – the national adjudicator for planning appeals.

Calderdale Council plan to demolish the derelict complex to make way for new developments.

Redevelopment of the mill has been the subject of debate for around a decade.
