BIG hearted couple John and Rita Cook celebrated their golden wedding - by donating money to a good cause.

Instead of asking friends and family for fancy presents or an expensive cruise to mark their special day, they decided to help others.

They asked for donations to the Heart of Huddersfield Appeal and presented a cheque for £425 to staff at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary.

Rita, 71, said: "At our age we don't need any more presents, so we decided instead to give something back to a charity that means a lot to us.

"I suffer from a heart murmur and palpitations and have had a lot of treatment at the hospital - so I wanted to show my appreciation and help others in need of heart treatment."

Rita and John, 74, from Broomfield Road, Marsh, celebrated their anniversary with friends and family at the YMCA club in Salendine Nook.

They met at a Town Hall dance in 1954 and married at Linthwaite Church two years later.

John used to work for electrical company Beaumont's, in Huddersfield and Rita was a secretary for Brellant Engineering in Almondbury.
