A HUDDERSFIELD grandmother is getting on her bike for a cause close to her heart.
Mrs Julia Mercer, 60, plans to cycle from Huddersfield to Canterbury to help Huddersfield Parish Church, St Peter’s.
She is a member of the church congregation and wants to help fund repairs to its ceiling and organ.
Mrs Mercer, of Longwood, has four children and seven grandchildren.
She is a regular cyclist, but admits: “I don’t do Lycra”.
She will set off on the 10-day ride on August 6 and has planned a route covering almost 300 miles, taking in cycle routes rather than main roads.
She said: “It’s a wonderful way of combining my different passions.
“It is a long-cherished ambition to make a pilgrimage to Canterbury Cathedral and I also hope to be able to help the church appeal.
“I do cycle a lot since I gave up working with the NHS in Huddersfield and have set a target of about 30 miles a day”.
She will be staying with friends and her journey will be via Sheffield, Loughborough, Market Harborough and Gillingham.
