AN organised cycle ride is on offer on New Year's Day for those who want to start shedding those Christmas pounds!

The short cycle ride will enable cyclists to start 2005 by exploring local country lanes and bridleways.

The ride will start at Kirkburton and be taken at an easy pace with a return by 1pm.

It is one of a series of monthly rides organised by Huddersfield Cycle Touring Club and the Kirklees Countryside Unit for those wishing to have a go at cycling at a slower pace.

Kirklees Countryside Access Officer, John Gleadow, said: "There is no better way of exploring the local countryside that on a bike travelling at a steady pace. There will be plenty of stops and a chance for a walk up any steep hills."

To take part please meet at Trycycling Cycle Shop, North Street, Kirkburton at 10am on Saturday, January 1.

The ride is suitable for mountain bikes, hybrids or road bikes. The route will use traffic-free bridleways where possible.
