MOUNTAIN rescuers from Huddersfield were involved in a huge security operation when a high-explosive bomb was found on the Peak District moors.

The bomb was discovered yesterday by two mountain bikers riding a track towards Broomhead Moor, near Stocksbridge.

Army bomb disposal teams were called from Nottingham and discovered that the bomb contained high explosive and was in a dangerous condition.

They, along with South Yorkshire Police and members of the Woodhead Mountain Rescue team, sealed off a 500-metre zone around the bomb through the night.

Woodhead team leader Mike France said: "They decided it was far too dangerous to try and blow up the bomb in the dark, so we brought in a cordon around the site throughout the night.

"It is well up on the moors and there are no properties around here, but it is something that needs a lot of care.

"The bomb disposal teams brought in specialist X-ray equipment to examine the bomb and concluded it is filled with high explosive.

"We have had training shells and low-explosive bombs found on the moors. These can normally be dealt with very quickly, but this is different.

"The peat on the moors is constantly shifting and if this is something from the Second World War, it has probably just become uncovered."
