COUNCIL tax bills in Calderdale are set to rise by 4.8%

The decision taken by the Calderdale Council Cabinet is due to be ratified at the council's budget meeting on March 1.

It means households in band D will pay £909.51 from April.

The figure does not include levies by West Yorkshire police and fire authorities, which have yet to be set.

Liberal Democrats and Labour said they would be challenging the figures.

Alternative proposals by the Lib Dems will be published this week.

Clr John Ford, leader of the Tory-run council, said Calderdale did not have the same grants that other local authorities enjoyed.

It makes it a more difficult job to prepare a budget, he said.
