FORTNIGHTLY bin collections are coming to all of Kirklees.

The council's Cabinet approved the decision yesterday.

Environment supremo Clr Martyn Bolt said: "This is key to our green agenda."

The plan means households will have a monthly glass collection, bi-weekly green bin collections instead of monthly, and a fortnightly grey bin pick-up rather than weekly.

The scheme - which already operates for 5,000 households in Almondbury, Lepton, Moldgreen and parts of Dalton - will be introduced across Kirklees over the next three years.

Clr Bolt said the council had to work hard to make residents aware of the change.

He said: "We need to continue to win hearts and minds as this rolls out so people understand what we're trying to do. Hopefully that will overcome any problems."

But Clr Bolt added that Kirklees did not plan to use technology to monitor each household's waste and fine those who don't recycle enough.

He said: "We have no plans to put micro-chips in our bins."
