TACKLING empties should be a top priority for soccer fans, say environmentalists.

Hundreds of millions of bottles of beer, wine and spirits will be drunk as the nation cheers on England during Euro 2004.

Everyone can help to recycle bottles by following a few simple steps - rather than just binning them.

Huddersfield man Sir John Harman, who is chairman of the Environmental Agency, said: "We don't want to discourage people from enjoying themselves, but we do want to make sure they don't score an environmental own goal."

Kirklees people are urged to use their green bins or walk to recycling centres, if possible.

Top tips include crushing cans before dumping them and making sure glass, plastic and cans are kept apart.

England produced 29m tons of municipal waste between 2001 and 2002. Three-quarters was dumped in tips while the rest was recycled or composted.

Overall, the UK produces seven tonnes of waste per person per year.
