A HUDDERSFIELD taxi driver is having another go at winning a seat on Kirklees Council.

Lib Dem Manjit Singh, 55, came third in Ashbrow at last year’s election. But the married father-of-two, who lives on Greenroyd Croft in Birkby, will have another go at this year’s election in May.

Mr Singh yesterday pledged to give up half the £12,000 a year basic allowance if elected.

He said: “I will continue as a taxi driver and I will have enough to support myself. If I’m elected I will give half my council wage to charity.”

Mr Singh supports a number of good causes including the Red Cross and the Multiple Sclerosis Society.

He is also a former secretary, treasurer and president of Fartown Sikh Temple.

Mr Singh will contest the seat against sitting Labour councillor Cath Harris in this year’s election on May 5.

Last year he won 1,490 votes in Ashbrow, finishing behind Conservative Bill Armer on 2,565 and Labour’s Jean Calvert, who retained the sat with 3,543 votes.
