WHEN a Birkby couple celebrated 60 years of marriage, they made it a diamond day, quite literally.
Henryk and Alina Grubczak, who have lived in Norwood Road since 1953, visited the world-famous diamond mine at Kimberley, South Africa, on the day of their anniversary.
The couple travelled from nearby Bloemfontein, where they were visiting their youngest daughter Niunia Oraki, who has lived in South Africa for 32 years.
The couple celebrated their anniversary with a party at their grandaughter Nikola’s home in Bloemfontein.
Henryk, 81, and Alina, 79, helped to build activities for the community of Polish people who settled in Huddersfield after the Second World War.
The couple are still active members of the old people’s club and Henryk used to manage the football team.
They have lived in Norwood Road, Birkby, since their second daughter Grazyna was born. Their oldest daughter Liz lives in Germany.
The couple both travelled through the Middle East when they fled Poland as youngsters. Alina moved to Zimbabwe and Henryk to Palestine.
They worked for much of their lives in clothing mills and factories. Henryk’s last job was with Jim Shires, of Saddleworth, and Alina’s with Standard Fireworks, of Crosland Hill.
Henryk said: “We were very happy to see so many of our family at the party.
“It was lovely to see all the little ones.”
