YOUNGSTERS at Birkby Junior School turned detectives to find out how science helps solve crimes.

Year 5 and 6 pupils found out how fingerprints and dental casts are used by forensic scientists to track down criminals during Science Week activities at the school.

Parents joined the children in studying how evidence such as a teeth marks in a partly-eaten apple and fingerprints on a ketchup bottle helped track down the Great Train Robbers.

About 150 pupils took part in the Scenes of Crime Investigation day which was organised by educational company Right Angle Events.

Teacher Simon Swift said: “The CSI day shows pupils how science can be applied in the real world and can provide real jobs.”
