COUNCILLORS have backed a proposal to move a Huddersfield children’s centre.

Kirklees Council’s Labour cabinet yesterday supported the plan to relocate Birkby Sure Start from Birkbees Day Care Centre on Old Halifax Road to the Birkby/Fartown Community Centre on Wasp Nest Road.

A report to councillors said the current centre suffers from “limited access to shared outdoor space” and becomes “very crowded” because it has no reception area.

The council spent £100,000 setting up the children’s centre in 2006 and pays Birkbees £2,000 a month in rent.

The council’s Labour cabinet yesterday agreed to spend £45,000 upgrading the community centre.

But cabinet member Clr Cath Harris warned that the Wasp Nest Road site may not be ideal.

“I support the idea in principle,” said the Ashbrow Labour woman.

“But I would like an assurance about access and parking. It’s on-street parking only for staff and parents using the centre.”
