AN acetylene cylinder leaked at a Birstall company leading to an evacuation.
The cylinder, used for welding and cutting purposes, caught fire at the Howden Clough Industrial Estate, off Leeds Road, at 11am yesterday.
Firefighters described the gas as “potentially explosive and highly volatile” and described it as a “precocious situation” which led to the evacuation of the premises after the fire.
But because the cylinder’s valve was missing, they were unable to turn the leak off so had to cordon the area off and wait for the acetylene level to burn off.
Fire crews from throughout West Yorkshire were at the scene for most of the day waiting for the gas to drop to a safe level as it could pose a health and safety problem.
It was more than seven hours later before Batley and Dewsbury fire crews were able to leave.
