A man is fighting for his life in hospital after suffering injuries as he tried to cling to a moving car at a retail park.

The 25-year-old was rushed to Leeds General Infirmary following the incident at Birstall Shopping Park on Saturday evening.

His condition was last night described as critical while police confirmed that they have arrested four men.

Drivers were thanked for their patience as police were forced to seal off the whole car park while they investigated.

The incident at the shopping complex happened at just after 6pm on Saturday.

Det Insp Mick Brown, of Huddersfield CID, said that there was initially a road traffic collision involving two vehicles.

This resulted in the occupant of one of the cars, the victim, chasing the other vehicle and then clinging onto it.

The man, who is local to the Birstall area, was then in collision with a third vehicle.

Det Insp Brown said: “The victim sustained significant injuries and his condition is critical.

“This took place all within the car park and it was cordoned off by police and closed for a short period of time.

“Drivers were hemmed in while we created a common path out.

“We would like to thank them for their patience and cooperation during this time.”

Four men are in custody after being arrested on suspicion of section 18 assault.

Any witnesses are asked to contact Det Sgt Damian Roebuck via 101.
