THREE birthday boys were among Huddersfield veterans who visited an army camp.

They were Jim Humphrey, from Bradley, turned 83, Dunkirk veteran Fred Raynes, from Dalton, turned 90, and John Wagner, of Holmbridge, turned 60.

The three ex-servicemen all celebrated on the same day the Huddersfield and District Army Veterans Association visited Catterick Camp. The group of 51 ex-army servicemen had been invited to the camp to watch a passing out parade of the 1st Infantry Training Battalion.

They watched the next generation of combat infantrymen receive awards for completing an arduous 26 week training course.

They later met the troops and their families and toasted them with a glass of port.

Secretary of the association, Cyril Ford, said: “We go every other year to watch a passing out parade.

“It’s nice to keep in touch with the young soldiers, and see what they are doing.

“It has changed a lot since our day. But the soldiers are still as disciplined and enthusiastic as we were.”

The veterans lunched in the Sergeants Mess.
