THE birth rate in Kirklees is among the highest in the country, figures have revealed.
The district was rated 19th in a nationwide study showing the number of babies born across 170 areas of the country.
Kirklees was the second highest in the region, behind Bradford.
The statistics, published by the Chartered Society of Physiotherapists, revealed 5,255 live births in Kirklees in 2003, amounting to 64.5 babies born to every 1,000 women of childbearing age.
London boroughs Hackney and Newham and the town of Luton scored highest in the survey.
One of the lowest areas was York where only 1,819 babies were born, amounting to only 45 per 100 women.
