A NEW local heritage project aims to help children and families from Kirklees’s African Caribbean community explore their roots.

The Parents of Black Children Association (PBCA) is celebrating the 60th Anniversary of “Windrush” with the launch of “Sankofa – Moving Forward… Looking Back” as part of Black History Month celebrations.

The Sanfoka launch tomorrow will be attended by special guest Paul Crooks, author of “Ancestors” and a recognised expert in Black genealogy who will give a talk about his own experience of tracing his ancestral roots back 200 years to West Africa.

The project will culminate in the development of a local history archive, which will be deposited within Kirklees Local History Service.

Milton Brown, Chief Executive Officer of PBCA said: “The essence of Sankofa teaches us of the importance of knowing our history, that we must go back and explore, understand and own our history in order to move forward.”

The launch is between 10.30am and 1.30pm at the Deighton Centre, Deighton Road.

Family learning workshops begin on Sunday the 9th, 16th and 23rd November, from 1 to 3.30pm.
