WEATHER forecaster across the area were caught on the hop with today's black ice.
Many forecasted an increase in temperatures leaving the worst of the frosty weather behind us.
But a series of factors contributed to the creation of an unusual phenomenon.
Huddersfield weather expert Paul Stevens said: “We weather people have to admit we were caught out by this.
“It is a very unusual condition which is seen in places like Canada, where it causes real problems.
“The freezing fog yesterday meant temperatures on the ground stayed well below freezing.

“Today milder air moved in and brought snow and rain. As that hit the milder air it became rain but the instant it landed on the freezing surfaces, it froze.
“The resultant ice was totally clear which caused people to think it was safe and brough about about the problems."
