PIGEON lovers have been literally creating a stink outside a playground.

The unknown bird lovers have been regularly leaving leftovers for the feathered fiends on a footpath next to Rashcliffe Hill Road play area, Lockwood.

Now hundreds of the flying vermin have been flocking to the spot and leaving large amounts of excreta.

Kirklees Council put up a “Do not feed the pigeons” sign this year, but it has been pulled down.

One resident said he was tired of taking his children past piles of pigeon poo.

The father, who does not want to be named, said: “It covers the path. It’s unhygienic and the food attracts rats and other vermin.

“People are bringing left-over meals, not just bread. If it was further away it wouldn’t be so bad, but it’s a few yards from a play area.’’

A Kirklees spokesman said: “Our Environmental Services department has worked with the community over many months.

“This has included door-to-door visits and a leaflet campaign, plus posters and signs.

“We will now need to look at this again, with a view to enforcement action.”
