FIREFIGHTERS led a man to safety after his home caught fire.

The blaze started behind the front door of the man's ground-floor flat on Smallwood Road, Shaw Cross, Dewsbury, at 1.30am yesterday.

The man, in his mid-30s, was in bed at the time.

Ossett firefighters were first there and led him to safety.

Crew manager Steve Prentice, from Dewsbury fire station, said the man was given oxygen and taken to Dewsbury District Hospital, suffering from breathing in smoke.

He was not badly hurt.

Crew manager Prentice said police and fire experts were investigating the cause of the blaze.

The fire was confined to the door and a small area of carpet behind it. The flat's hallway was slightly smoke-damaged.
