PEOPLE were urged to do safety checks on immersion heaters after a house fire in Sowood.

The fire broke out at the terrace home of an elderly couple in Park Lane yesterday and gutted the airing cupboard.

It is thought an electrical fault sparked the blaze, which was spotted when a smoke alarm sounded.

Elland fire station watch manager Dave Boothroyd said: “It is important firstly that people have their immersion heaters checked regularly by qualified electricians. And secondly, we urge people not to pack airing cupboards with towels and bedding as these can fuel any fire that does start, as happened in this case.”
