A WOMAN was rescued by firefighters after she was trapped in her burning home.

The middle-aged woman was asleep at the terraced house on Woodbine Road in Fartown when she was woken by smoke at 1.10pm yesterday.

A fire had broken out in the kitchen near the cellar head and been burning for some time.

The flames burned through the ceiling and went into the landing above.

Luckily the woman woke up and managed to stick her head out the bedroom window to breathe in fresh air before firefighters arrived.

Watch Manager Alan Woodcock, of Huddersfield fire station, said: "We immediately sent two teams in to tackle the fires in the kitchen and on the landing.

"We also put a ladder up to the window and a firefighter helped the woman down to safety."

The blaze wrecked the kitchen and badly smoke-damaged the rest of the house.

The cause of the fire is being investigated, but it is not suspicious.

Watch Manager Woodcock added: "The house had no smoke detectors.

"If it had, the damage would have been far less severe and it is likely the lady would not have been trapped."

Firefighters carry out free home safety checks and fit detectors for free. Phone 0800 587 4536.
