Plans for a new uniform for pupils at a Huddersfield school have upset some parents.

Many have voiced concerns about the costs of the new uniform planned for Colne Valley High School from September.

And one has labelled the issue “Blazergate”, after previous issues at the school regarding equipment and uniforms,.

But other parents have praised the schools’e efforts to bring in a new regime and said the proposed uniform looks smart.

The changes were outlined by head Christian Wilcocks, who hopes it will signal a new future for the school, which has had its share of problems.

A major part of the re-branding of the school, which became an academy last year, is the uniform revamp, with claret and old replacing the blue uniform.

The school insist the new uniform will cost £45.

But parent Melanie Griffiths is concerned at the costs of kitting out her twin daughters who will be in their final year at the school.

“There is an environmental issue in discarding perfectly good uniform and buying new. It is hardly acting as a role model to the students by simply scrapping perfectly good uniforms on such a large scale for no good reason.

“At no point were parents consulted. If I were actually to go along with what you are suggesting. I would be discarding £180 plus of uniform bought in September and would then have to fork out at least another £120 for uniform for two children for the short time they will be in year 11.

“The last thing this school needs is yet another public row, adding “Blazergate” to “Rulergate” and “Trousergate”.

Other parents’ views from social media included: Samantha Jane Stevens: “Let the quidditch games begin. Looks like a Griffindor uniform from Harry Potter but it does look nice if they’re going for the claret and gold look of Huddersfield Giants.”

Amanda Jayne: “Changing the uniform won’t make the kids smarter, or the school better! More expense for us parents and this will be the third change in 2 years. Ridiculous.”

George A. Moiras: “Oh no... new uniform looks REALLY REALLY awful and gloomy”

Nichola Zaffino: “The colours match Huddersfields rugby team and the Yorkshire rose is quite appropriate for Yorkshire. Plus my boys had to wear blazers at All Saints and I had to buy them one every year so although it is an expense ‘it’s once a year’.

James Wilkinson: “Expecto patronis Potter is back without his glasses and this time has two female friends instead of one with elder wand in hand has Voldemort come to Colne Valley coming soon in a grammar school near you!”

Jeanette Seed: “So they’re bringing back the blazers! I like the colour, but how are people supposed to afford them when they’re trying to put food on the table? And if you can only get them from approved suppliers, think again cos they’ll charge more so parents will be over a barrel, and the children losing out of schooling when it’s not their or their parents’ fault! This rip off on prices for school uniform prices must stop! My lad’s grown up now, but I hardly ate for months just to be able to afford the uniform!”
