A BMW driver was taken to hospital this morning after he left Drub Road, Gomersal, drove through a dry stone wall and ploughed 50 metres through a boggy field.

Fire crews from Batley and Gomersal raced to the scene at 5.30am and began cutting a channel using shovels to reach the driver, a man in his 30s.

Watch commander, Gary Hatton, said: "Fortunately because the field was so boggy that stabilised the vehicle which was up to its axles in mud so we didn't have to cut him out.

"We cut a channel to open the door, got him on a stretcher and away in an ambulance to Dewsbury Hospital. He was conscious and able to talk though he had quite a bad head injury."

Police are investigating the incident.
