A MAN who vanished while out walking his dog has tragically been found dead.

The body of the man, who was reported missing from his Marsden home on Monday evening, has been found in Huddersfield Narrow Canal.

A family member discovered the body of the man, who is believed to be in his 40s, shortly before 7am yesterday morning near Warehouse Hill Road.

The man’s family reported him missing shortly before midnight on Monday when his dog returned home without him.

He had left home at around 8.30pm the same evening to walk the dog.

It is thought family members had been searching throughout much of the night for the man and were joined by police teams.

The identity of the man or details of his family have not yet been revealed.

A West Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said the man’s body had been recovered by the police’s underwater search team after it was spotted in the Huddersfield Narrow Canal just before 7am yesterday morning.

The man was found close to Lock 39 near the centre of the village.

It is a very deep, steep-sided lock chamber which is more than 15 feet deep when full.

The towpath which runs alongside the canal, close to the road, leads down a steep, cobbled path to run below a bridge carrying the road.

Police confirmed that the West Yorkshire Police helicopter had been out during the early hours searching for the man before the sad discovery was made.

Police said there were no suspicious circumstances.

Details of the death have been reported to the coroner and an inquest is expected to open later this week.
