BOLLYWOOD'S equivalent to the Oscars are to be held in Yorkshire, it has been announced.

The International Indian Film Academy Awards will take place in Sheffield, with associated events held in Bradford and Leeds in the days running up to the ceremony.

Yorkshire beat New York, Rome, Barcelona, Marrakech, Melbourne and Hong Kong to be named the venue for 2007.

It is the first time a region, rather than a city, has won the bid.

The biggest stars in Bollywood are expected to visit Yorkshire and the ceremony at Sheffield's Don Valley Stadium will be beamed to a worldwide audience of more than 300 million viewers.

Other events will take place at Headingley Cricket Ground in Leeds and Bradford's National Museum of Photography, Film and Television, plus venues across the region.
