ARMY bomb disposal experts were alerted after a live grenade was found on playing fields in Huddersfield.
Workmen digging at Leeds Road Playing Fields close to Huddersfield Broad Canal in Deighton discovered the weapon at 12.35pm yesterday .
The area was immediately sealed off and a policeman with army experience confirmed it was a live grenade with the pin still in it.
Army bomb disposal experts took the grenade away at 3.30pm.
Sgt Tim O'Sullivan, of Huddersfield police, said: "From the colour of the grenade it was thought to have been made in America.
"It's a complete mystery how it ended up buried on Leeds Road Playing Fields."
