Thousands of revellers flocked to bonfires across Kirklees and Calderdale for fireworks, fun and food over the weekend.

Large events took place at Huddersfield YMCA in Salendine Nook and at Holmfirth, Elland and Mirfield.

And organisers of the YMCA event are celebrating a bumper crowd way above their wildest expectations.

The bonfire was organised on just three weeks notice by the football section at the Laund Hill club after the usual rugby section organisers decided they could not take it on.

With so little time to prepare, organisers were hoping they would break even or make just a small loss after hurriedly putting together a programme of activities.

But to their surprise more than 2,000 people flocked to the bonfire netting them more than £5,000.

One of those behind the event, Craig Gibbons, said the rugby section had backed out of doing it after struggling last year.

“We got a pyrotechnic company in and we were hoping to break even and get about 200 people in,” he said.

“We didn’t know what to expect but by about 7pm they were queuing all the way down the drive. We couldn’t believe it. It was incredible.

“It went really well, we got well over 2,000 people, and everybody seemed to have a fantastic evening.”

Craig said the rugby section would be kicking themselves now the footballers had shown them how it was done!

“We worked really hard to get the message out there,” he said.

“We printed 5,000 leaflets for schools and put posters up and we were all over social media on Twitter and Facebook to get as many people as possible to come down.

“The fireworks were really spectacular and we’ve had a lot of positive feedback.

“Next year we’re going to do it slightly bigger and slightly better!”

Thousands more people attended bonfires organised by Round Table groups in Elland and Mirfield and the Rotary Club in Holmfirth.
