FIREWORK fans braved heavy rain to enjoy the thrill of bonfire night.

But floods were more of a risk than fires at last night’s celebration of Guy Fawkes’ failed attempt to blow up the Houses of Parliament, as torrential rain swept across the region.

But despite the wet weather organised displays went ahead at Shepley Cricket Club, the Jack 0’Mitre Scammonden, and some back gardens.

Ian Watkinson, secretary of Shepley Cricket Club, said more than 2,000 people turned up to see the 20-minute firework display and enjoy traditional foods.

He said: “It’s been awful weather but it stayed dry for the crucial hour when people were deciding whether to come out or not.

“And of course kids don’t take a bit of rain as an excuse not to come.”

Tonight there is a bonfire and firework display at Paddock Cricket Club, from 6.15pm and tomorrow there are events at Woodfield Park in Lockwood, at Crosland Hill opposite the Sands House pub, and at Parkwood Scouts, Longwood. All three start at about 6pm.
