A HUDDERSFIELD pub landlord has created his own eternal flame.

No, not a cover of The Bangles classic love song, but a bonfire that will not seem to go out.

Charles Cartwright, pictured, landlord of the Beaumont Arms in Kirkheaton, built his bonfire using three skipfuls of chopped wood.

He lit it at 5.30pm on November 4 for an organised Bonfire Night display.

And it was still burning when he returned more than a week later - with flames reaching 3ft high.

Mr Cartwright is baffled.

He said: "We didn't put any fuel on it and we haven't added anything. I think it's just that there is so much wood, it is solid."

The bonfire, in a field next to the pub, has also attracted attention from local people.

Mr Cartwright said: "Customers are saying am I trying to break a record. I'm not, but it's quite impressive."
