PLAY areas in Ainley Top and Brighouse will get a makeover.

The Ainley Top recreation ground and Lane Head play area in Brighouse will benefit from a multi-million pound scheme to boost play facilities.

They are two of eight across Calderdale being refurbished.

Clr Ian Cooper, cabinet member for community services, said: “With childhood obesity and inactivity at an all-time high, we believe it’s more important than ever to encourage children to get active and have the chance to play outdoors in a safe, fun and exciting environment.”

It’s the final phase of a scheme to refurbish 22 playgrounds in the borough to provide naturalistic and challenging play areas for eight to 13-year-olds.

Since 2008, the Finkil Street, Hove Edge and Spring Edge, Saville Park playgrounds have been given an overhaul.

A play area at Clay House, Greetland, will open in March.

Calderdale received £1,171,000 in funding from the Government’s Children’s Plan, with £235m being allocated to build or upgrade more than 3,500 playgrounds nationwide.

Calderdale Council will be consulting local residents before finalising the plans.
