SYRINGES and medical boxes have been dumped near to a path in Honley.

Two yellow containers with needles inside were dumped off New Mill Road earlier this week along with other waste.

The yellow containers are similar to those used in medical practices for discarding needles.

A sign on the containers reads: “Danger – contaminated sharps only. To be incinerated”.

Residents say the area where the needles were found is used as a shortcut by pupils going to nearby Honley High School.

They’re calling for action to be taken against anyone caught or found to be flytipping.

Resident Mick Madden said: “It is unbelievable and totally irresponsible for anyone to do this.

“There are two boxes and they sound like they’re full when you rattle them.

“No-one should be dumping or flytipping anything, but especially not things like this.”

A couple of years ago residents around New Mill Road saw an increase in flytipping, but it quickly disappeared.

Then a few weeks ago they noticed several items had been dumped in the area and Mr Madden put a sign up warning people against it.

But earlier this week he spotted a trades van pull up. A short time later the yellow containers were discovered.

Mr Madden added: “I don’t condone flytipping at all, but I don’t understand why anybody goes to the effort of dumping things in beauty spots or by paths when they could as easily go to the tip.

“My neighbours have children and children use this as a shortcut over the fields to go to school – they should not have to walk by things like this.”

The police were informed of the incident and told Mr Madden to report any future incidents immediately.

Residents also contacted Kirklees Council environmental officers and passed on details of the van, it’s registration number and a description of the men to investigate the flytipping.

A spokeswoman for Kirklees Council warned people against flytipping.

The maximum penalty for anyone caught flytipping or found to have dumped items illegally is a £50,000 fine or six months imprisonment.

The spokeswoman said: “Some boxes containing needles plus rucksacks and suitcases have now been removed from the site.”
