SPORTING hopefuls in Kirklees were given a knockout boost thanks to an amateur boxing contest.

The International Amateur Boxing Competition, part of the Kirklees Youth Games, raised £2,500 for the Sporting Legends fund.

Fighters from three local clubs took on boxers from Cyprus in the event at the Galpharm Stadium.

The money was presented to Huddersfield Giants player Eorl Crabtree.

Clr Liz Smaje, Kirklees Council’s Cabinet member for leisure and neighbourhood services, said: “Money is always a problem for young sportspeople trying to get to the top of their chosen sports. This fund is designed to give a bit of the financial assistance needed to help them get there.

“It is good news that this sporting event raised such a significant amount of money for the fund.”

The Sporting Legends Fund provides grants of up to £100 for 11 to 19-year-old sportsmen and women who compete at county level or the equivalent.

Their sport must have a governing body, for example Amateur Swimming Association or Lawn Tennis Association.

Awards have been capped at £100 so the fund can help more people.

Youngsters who compete in gymnastics, athletics, cycling, tennis, motor sports and show jumping have already benefited.
