A THREE-YEAR-OLD boy was shot while he played in the street on his toy tractor.

Little Kevin Maguire was playing close to his home in Riddings Road at Deighton when people nearby heard a bang or crack.

Kevin began to cry and a neighbour went to help him.

He had a puncture wound in his right shoulder which was bleeding. The wound is thought to have been caused by an air rifle.

His mum, 35-year-old Dolores, said: "The neighbour brought him home and I rang the police immediately.

"They were there very quickly, but by then Kevin had started to go into shock."

She stemmed the blood flow and Kevin was taken to Huddersfield Royal Infimary.

Dolores added: "He was given an X-ray and other tests. There was no sign of a pellet, so it must have hit him and fallen to the ground.

"If it had hit him in the eye or head he could have been killed."

She said neighbours reported seeing two African-Caribbean men in a white Rover car parked on Riddings Road just before the incident which happened shortly after 6.30pm on Wednesday.

Police have appealed for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward.
