A FIVE-YEAR-OLD boy has died in a freak accident in Dewsbury.

Daniyaal Amin was riding his bike after his first day of the new school year when a pillar fell on him outside his family home in Falcon Road, Savile Town, at 4.45pm yesterday.

It is thought the 5ft pillar had become loose after being hit by the family car earlier in the day.

Daniyaal - the family's only son - was playing out while he waited for his parents to take him to the nearby religious centre known as a maddrassa.

Daniyaal died at Dewsbury District Hospital shortly after arriving at the accident and emergency department.

Clr Khizar Iqbal, who was today comforting the boy's parents, said the family were devastated by the tragedy.

"I knew Daniyaal and his family very well," he said. "He was such a lovely boy and this is such a tragic accident. His parents are devastated. It is heartbreaking to see them going through such pain.

"He had just come home from school and was waiting to go to the maddrassa, so he told his mum he wanted to play out on his bike.

"After people started hearing the news more than 100 came to pay their respects. We are expecting even more today.

"I hope the family can gain some comfort from the way the community has reacted. Everyone in the area is in total shock at the moment.

"The family is only young, but they are very well-liked in the area and nobody can believe something this terrible could happen."

West Yorkshire Police confirmed a boy had been killed following an accident outside his house. A police spokes- woman said there were no suspicious circumstances surrounding the death and the coroner was expected to open an inquest later today.
