A BOY sparked a major police alert when he was spotted with a gun.

The West Yorkshire Police helicopter and armed officers swooped on Sheepridge after people living near Bracken Square spotted the youngster with the weapon at about 2pm yesterday.

He was arrested, and police recovered a black imitation handgun which could fire ball-bearings.

The 12-year-old from Sheepridge was taken to Huddersfield police station where he was later given a formal reprimand.

Sgt Tim O'Sullivan, of Huddersfield police, said: "We take any reported sightings of weapons exceptionally seriously.

"There is no reason for anyone to be out and about carrying an imitation firearm.

"These weapons will always be treated as real until we seize and closely examine them."
