CHRISTMAS shoppers should boycott Chinese goods, an MP has said.

Huddersfield backbencher Barry Sheerman urged people to buy British presents instead.

Speaking in the House of Commons, the Labour man said: “There are about 10 days of shopping before Christmas and we have a £30bn trade deficit with China.

“I have conducted an experiment that shows that it is possible to buy presents made only in the United Kingdom, or, at a push, Britain and Europe.

“May we have a campaign and debate to get people to buy things made here because it provides employment for young people and creates jobs?”

Leader of the House of Commons Sir George Young replied: “I hope that everyone will do what they can to promote jobs and prosperity by, where possible, buying goods made in the UK”.
