POLICE were called after a children’s soccer match ended in violence.

The game at playing fields at Shelley High School was the first time youngsters from Skelmanthorpe and Clifton Rangers under 11s teams had played an 11-a-side game.

But it ended ugly after Skelmanthorpe were beaten 6-4 on Sunday morning in the Huddersfield RCD Junior Football League game.

The allegations are that a Skelmanthorpe player shook hands with a Clifton player – and kicked him along with other Clifton players.

The Clifton player retaliated and then a parent got involved.

Other parents are then said to have run onto the pitch to pull him off the boy.

One parent who saw the melee unfold said: “I’ve been involved in junior soccer for years and I’ve never seen anything like this before. The police were called and two cars turned up with blue lights flashing.

“The officers were already taking statements when I left. This is the first match these children had played as 11-a-side teams. Up to Sunday they had only played mini-soccer.’’

Police have confirmed that no arrests have been made so far, but arrangements have been made to take further statements from people who were there.

A police spokeswoman said they were investigating two assault allegations – one by a man and the other by a young boy.
