AN apprentice painter and decorator working for a Huddersfield firm is one of the best in Britain.
Greg Byram, 19, who has completed his three-year training with Ramsay Clay, has won the Dulux Shield for apprentice of the year at Leeds College of Building.
During his apprenticeship, he worked on major projects with the Bath Street firm, including a mock-up of a royal suite for the Savoy Hotel in London, bar conversions in Holland and a range of domestic and commercial contracts around Yorkshire.
Greg, who lives at Bradley and attended Rastrick High School, is one of four apprentices at the family-run painting and decorating firm, which was established in 1946 and has 16 staff.
Greg specialises in wallpaper hanging and decorative painting.
Nathan Clay, who runs the company with his father, John, said: “We have a long-standing commitment to apprentices.
“We also have an experienced staff who are able to pass on the skills of the older generation of tradesmen to our young recruits.”
He added: “Greg has excelled at all levels.”
