A SPECIAL service will be held this weekend to mark the centenary of Kirkburton Mothers' Union.

The Songs of Praise service will be at All Hallows' Church at 7.30pm on Saturday.

The MU branch at the church is celebrating its 100th year since the first enrolment service, when 30 members joined.

At its peak, the branch had 60 members.

The Mothers' Union was founded in Hampshire in 1876.

But it was in 1904 when the wife of the Rev Richard Phipps suggested that a Mothers' Union should start in the Kirkburton parish.

The branch now hopes to attract new members, especially younger mothers.

The celebration service is to be attended by the Rev Graham Whitcroft, the Rural Dean of Kirkburton.

Invitations have been sent to MU branches throughout the deanery.
