More than 80 people in Kirklees tried to vote for BOTH leave and remain in the EU Referendum.

The Electoral Commission has revealed the number of ballot papers cast in last month’s referendum that were deemed to be invalid in each individual local authority counting area.

In the build-up to the vote the question of whether the UK should leave the European Union was dividing hearts and minds across the country, and it seems that for some people the choice proved too much.

As many as 86 people in Kirklees put a cross in the boxes for both the leave and remain options with a further 95 people leaving their ballot papers unmarked. In both cases this renders the vote void and none of these ballots were counted towards the final totals.

Whether this was down to protest or crippling indecision on the part of the voters in question we will probably never know.

It means that Kirklees had a higher than average rate of rejected ballot papers with 8.6 in every 10,000 ballots cast rejected.

The Kirklees vote showed 54.67% voted to leave the EU and 45.33% voted to Remain.

Across the whole of the UK a total of 25,359 ballots were rejected by returning officers - the equivalent of 7.6 in every 10,000 ballots cast.

Of this number 9,084 included votes for both remain and leave while a further 15,207 papers were rejected because they had no marks on them at all.

Leicester was the most likely place in the UK for a ballot paper to be rejected with 24 in every 10,000 votes rejected.
