A TOWN'S fire station needs more firefighters.

Mirfield is staffed by a retained - part-time - crew, but numbers have dwindled and nine more are needed.

Retained firefighters must live or work within five minutes of the fire station on Huddersfield Road and be able to respond to an emergency immediately.

The station will be staging an awareness day from 10am to 5pm on Saturday, when anyone interested can talk to other part-time Mirfield firefighters and fire service recruiters.

Mirfield firefighters are called upon to back up Huddersfield and Dewsbury's full-time stations.

They also go to about 300 incidents in their own area each year.

Retained firefighters must attend weekly three-hour training sessions.

They are paid for this, plus each time they are called out. They also get a yearly fee, which starts at around £3,000.
