FLIGHT Lieutenant Odille Carpe’s family had a surprise when they opened a copy of Tuesday’s Examiner.

Mum Susan and dad Monty saw her smiling face all the way from Afghanistan – pictured with golfer Colin Montgomerie, nicknamed Monty.

The former Rastrick High School pupil is currently on a five-month tour of Afghanistan and was lucky to meet the golfer when he visited Camp Bastion.

He met troops along with Bradley Park golf professional Parnell Reilly.

Odille even got to hold the Ryder Cup while they were there.

Odille’s parents were pleasantly surprised to see her pictured.

Susan, of Brighouse, said: “My mum rang me to say Odille was in the Examiner, we didn’t know why. What a shock, but a pleasure too to see her.

“I sent her a message on Facebook to tell her we’d seen her in the Examiner – she was surprised too.

“She told us she got to hold the Ryder Cup when Colin was there, which she loved.”

Flight Lieutenant Carpe has been in Afghanistan since October and will return in the middle of February.

Susan added: “She’s very busy, she’s always working but she’s enjoying herself.

“She was in the 59 Huddersfield Squadron Air Training Corps with another guy called Greg who is also out there – there are quite a few from Huddersfield in Afghanistan.”

In 2009 Odille became an RAF officer, passing tough training in military skills, leadership, self-awareness and adventure studies.

A former Carr Green Junior and Infant School pupil, she studied logistics and supply chain management at the University of Huddersfield.

The Examiner reported on Tuesday how Monty and fellow golfer Reilly held golf lessons for Afghan children during a secret visit.
