OFFENDERS carried out more than 646,600 hours of unpaid work in West Yorkshire in one month.

And one of the schemes they took part in was to fold leaflets letting residents know how to contact the police in non-emergencies.

Police in Brighouse say they used people on the Community Payback scheme to spread the word.

Sgt Warren Pitman, of Brighouse police, said: “We want offenders to start putting back into their local community.

“The joint work that the police and probation are doing is vital to ensuring that the offenders help to build their communities.”

And they revealed that throughout West Yorkshire 5,288 offenders completed unpaid work to the tune of £3.8m for the good of the community.
