A pupil has conquered a mountain challenge.

Josh Simpson, a pupil at William Henry Smith School, Brighouse, climbed to Everest basecamp.

Along with his teacher, Barrie Campbell, the duo scaled giant heights to complete their challenge.

The student and teacher were part of an Extreme Classroom project which also included some top names from the sports world.

Rachel Mackenzie, the World Thai-Boxing Champion, was one of them and she said: “During the trip we faced some huge challenges; the altitude, the relentless walking and camping, the weather, the lack of time away from the group.

“All these things were a huge test of character.

“Yet despite all these challenges, Josh, with some very clever encouragement from Barrie, absolutely blossomed.

“Josh coped incredibly well with everything that he was presented with and the skill of his teacher seeing where he needed some extra prompting meant that during the course of the trip he blossomed.”

Josh was joined in the contest by fellow William Henry Smith student, Jack Smith who lost out in the semi-final stages.

The BBC project “Extreme Classroom” featured 16 students, chosen from applicants with complex learning difficulties and challenging behaviour from across the UK, entering the next stage of a selection process for The Highest Classroom on Earth.

At the end of the project, the final eight got to climb to the Everest Base Camp at the foot of the Khumba Icefall.
