HOUSEHOLDERS have been urged to "lighten up" to prevent burglaries.

Police say homes left in a darkness are a beacon for burglars.

But help is at hand from energy company, Npower, which has donated 8,000 free low energy light bulbs for distribution on crime prevention days in North Kirklees supermarkets.

The events are organised by the police and Dewsbury Divisional Neighbourhood Watch Association to help reduce the number of house burglaries in winter.

John Ellis, Dewsbury Police Neighbourhood Watch Liaison Officer, said: "Every year, as the nights draw in, there is often an increase in burglaries which occur during the early evening.

"The reason for this is quite simple. Not only can thieves move around our streets during dark evenings without drawing attention to themselves, they can also easily spot unoccupied houses. A few simple measures can be taken to considerably reduce the risk of being burgled.

"All that is required is a little bit of thought and preparation before leaving the house."

He urged people to leave lights on in well-used rooms such as bedrooms or lounges - not just in the hall as burglars are well used to this ploy.

Timer switches could also be used to turn lights on around the house at different times.

"There is no doubt that if the house looks occupied it is less likely to be targeted," said Mr Ellis.

The free bulbs were being given out today at Sainsbury's, Dewsbury, and will be given out again from 10am to 4pm on Tuesday at Morrisons, Heckmondwike, and on Friday at Tesco in Batley.
