ONE of Huddersfield’s leading manufacturers has had plans to expand one of its factories approved.

Engineering firm Thomas Broadbent and Sons have been granted permission by Kirklees Council to build another production bay at their factory on the east side of Queen Street South.

The bay, measuring approximately 73m in length, 17m in width and 10m in height, has been approved alongside plans to refurbish Broadbent offices also on the east side on the street.

But the company says it is awaiting the outcome of a planning application by Asda before any work will start.

The supermarket chain hopes to build a £40m store on the west side of Queen Street South where other Broadbent factories and offices now stand.

Asda submitted their plans to Kirklees Council in July 2009, but the council is yet to make a decision on the proposals.

Broadbent, which plans to move its Huddersfield operation to the east side of Queen Street South, says its hands are tied until the council decides on Asda’s plan.

Director Simon Broadbent said: “The whole move is dependent on Asda’s plans and at this stage we don’t know when that’s going to be decided.

“I’m hoping the Asda plans will be approved before November of December but there’s been no indication from Kirklees.”
